There will be a lot of school spirit mixed in with the holiday fun

as the 23rd annual Montrose Christmas Parade makes its way down Honolulu

Avenue tonight. Glendale's public schools are well represented in the

parade ranks, according to Myrna Grijalva, president of the Montrose

Shopping Park Association. Friends and family members will be out in

force along the parade route to cheer the students on their way.

Among the participants: the band and flag team from Rosemont Middle

School; the band, cheerleaders, drill team and Charismatics from

Crescenta Valley High School; the drill team from Mark Keppel Elementary

School; the drill team from Toll Middle School; the songleaders,

cheerleaders and flag team from Hoover High School; the band and drill

team from Roosevelt Middle School; the band, drill team and auxiliary

cheerleaders from Wilson Middle School; and the band, color guard and

drill team from Glendale High School. The fun starts at 6:30 p.m.

Congratulations to Glenoaks, R.D. White and Verdugo Woodlands

elementary schools, which are among the Glendale schools tapped to apply

for the prestigious California Distinguished School designation.

Administrators, teachers and parents at all the school sites are hard at

work writing the various components that make up the formal application

packet, due on Dec. 17. The winners will be announced next spring.

Here's a look at what's happening at Glendale cluster schools

reporting in this week:

Glenoaks -- The school's foundation recently voted to help fund the

purchase of 32 iBook laptop computers for use by upper grade students,

according to Judy Rogers, PTA president. The new computers will have

wireless Internet capability, server port access and will complement the

existing 20-station computer lab now being used by students in the

primary grades.

The Sharing Angel coin drive also gets underway this month with

proceeds to benefit struggling Glenoaks families.

Horace Mann -- Wednesday is a big day at Horace Mann. Sixth-graders in

Tracks A and B will take part in ceremonies at 1:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Roosevelt Middle School to mark their successful completion

of the DARE drug awareness and resistance program, sponsored by the

Glendale Police Department. Later in the day, the Horace Mann Chorus will

perform at 6:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

John Marshall -- The sounds of the holiday season will fill the air at

John Marshall on Monday when students in the school chorus perform their
