Council decides on interviews for city clerk

February 26, 2000

CITY HALL -- Assistant City Clerk Doris Twedt, the front-runner to

replace Aileen Boyle as Glendale City Clerk, will have to go through an

open interview process to get the job.

The Glendale City Council voted 3-2 Tuesday to seek applicants for the

job that pays up to $89,136 a year.

Mayor Ginger Bremberg and Councilman Gus Gomez unsuccessfully sought

to get Twedt appointed to the post without screening candidates and

holding interviews.

"I think within the organization we have a very qualified assistant

city clerk in Doris Twedt," Gomez said. "She would fill in very well."

Councilmen Sheldon Baker, Rafi Manoukian and Dave Weaver said they had

nothing against Twedt but thought the council should be consistent in how

it fills vacancies to the elected position. The council accepted

applications and interviewed candidates a year ago when the city

treasurer's post was vacated by Betty Evans.

No timetable has been set for accepting applications and interviewing

candidates. A report will be brought back to the council outlining the

process.

Boyle announced she will step down March 15, more than a year before

her term expires April 2001. The city's Charter does not allow the

council to call a special election.

City Manager Jim Starbird is expected to name an acting city clerk to

serve after Boyle leaves and before the council appointment is made.

Twedt said she will apply for the job and doesn't mind being passed

over by the council at this time.

"It is a fair procedure and the practice they used in the past," Twedt

said. "It's not unexpected. I was pleased with the comments made about me

personally."
