No excuses not to vote

March 06, 2000

Robert Shaffer

GLENDALE -- So today is March 6, and you haven't even thought about

the March 7 primary elections.

If you haven't registered to vote, you won't vote tomorrow. But if you

have, the county will help you find your polling place and local taxi

companies will take you there for free.

For those of you who don't know where to vote, you can find that

information on the back cover of the sample ballot you should have

received in the mail last week.

If you can't find it, call your city clerk, go to any county library

or call the county Registrar-Recorder at (800) 815-2666.

If you can't make it Tuesday, voters can drive to Norwalk between 8

a.m. and 5 p.m. today and vote absentee.

Need a ride?

Three Glendale taxi companies are offering free rides to voting sites

in Burbank, Glendale and La Canada Flintridge.

City Cab, Yellow Cab Co. and Checker Cab Co., three taxi services run

by the same company, will pick you up, take you to vote and return you

home all day Tuesday.

"It's for seniors more than anything," said Kevin Schaffer, part owner

of the cab companies.

Don't look for free advice, however -- Schaffer said cabbies will not

be sharing their views on their favorite candidates.

But they could, he said.

"Most of the drivers are going for citizenship so they are quite

knowledgeable about the political process," he said.

The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
