said. "Our defense was OK; we allowed just one error.
"Deseree [Demchak]'s ball wasn't moving. It was just flat. Her
change-up has been nothing like it was at the beginning of the year."
Demchak (7-9) surrendered nine runs in her three innings of work.
Cecilia Covarruba gave up five in two innings before the 10-run mercy
rule was invoked. Combined, they allowed 19 hits.
Canyons (13-3, 6-0) sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs
in the top of the first. Valarie Reyes, Sandra Rodgriguez and Lacy
Bregger doubled and scored successively.
Up 7-0, the Cougars had four straight singles to score two more runs
in the third.
"They just kept hitting the ball into the gap," Becker said. "But
Canyons is by far the best hitting team we've seen thus far. I know their
the team to beat."
GCC (8-10, 2-5) had only two hits and three baserunners. Chrissy
Paknik and Julie Choi singled in the second and third and Nisi-Jo Marquez
reached on shortstop Chantal Pershing's throwing error in the fourth.
At that point, Marquez tried to get the Vaqueros onto the board. She
stole second and advanced to third on Paknik's grounder to second.
However, Zulema Argota also grounded to second and Marquez was stranded.
"The good thing is that we only struck out twice," Becker said. "We
did a good job of getting the bat on the ball."
Canyons sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, scoring six
runs. Bregger singled twice to finish four for five. Angela De La Gerda
singled and ended up two for three with two runs scored.
