Storm leaves some homes without power for hours

April 21, 2000

GLENDALE -- It's hard to see a power outage in the dark.

Glendale Water and Power employees thought they had quickly taken care

of all the homes near the Glendale (2) Freeway that lost power when

lightening struck a transformer Tuesday night.

But two neighborhoods with about 20 homes were left powerless for

nearly nine hours after the lightning blew out their electrical

connection, said Bill Hall, electrical services administrator for the

department.

"We thought the service was completely restored, and then we started

getting calls," he said.

The affected homes were without power from shortly after midnight to

about 9 a.m. Tuesday.

One of those who had to sit in the dark was 87-year-old John Becich.

"Other than being in World War II, I've never been out of power that

long," he said.
