GAINS

GCC SCHOLARSHIPS EXCEED $300K

Glendale Community College's legacy of philanthropic service continued

when it recently awarded more than $300,000 in scholarships at The

Castaway restaurant in Burbank.

Hundreds of students on May 18 benefited from the awards, which ranged

from under $100 to more than $2,000. The cash will go a long way toward

helping these young minds achieve their academic goals.

Student Dimitrios Sinodinos, who was named the school's Man of the

Year, said it best when he called GCC "the best college family I've been

a part of."

The school and its faculty certainly have been one of Glendale's best

neighbors.

SIXTH-GRADER WINS SPELLING BEE

Young Rustin Zomorodi proved he knows how to spell success when he

captured first place in the Glendale Unified School District Elementary

School Spelling Bee.

The spelling was held Monday at the district's headquarters. It was

sponsored by the district and Soroptimist International of Glendale.

The competition was blessedly free of the glitch that forced its

postponement earlier this month, after it was learned some of the

participants didn't receive the proper study lists. District spokesman

Vic Pallos apologized the students and audience at the beginning of

Monday's competition for the earlier problem.

But the young master spellers gamely pressed ahead, and Rustin, a

sixth-grader from R.D. White Elementary, won the day by correctly

spelling "mistletoe."

We congratulate Rustin for his accomplishment.

For the record, when asked to spell "mistletoe," two of five

News-Press editors misspelled it on their first try.

LOSS

HOOVER STUDENT KILLED IN CRASH

Adding more sorrow to an already tragic year at Hoover High, student

Hamoon Hajianpour, 18, was killed in a weekend car accident in Thousand

Oaks.

Hajianpour was returning from a beach party with two friends when the

driver fell asleep at the wheel and the Jeep Cherokee they were in

crashed, according to CHP reports. Hajianpour, who was in the back seat

and not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle and killed. His

friends, who were wearing seat belts, escaped with minor injuries.

No more powerful lesson in the importance of wearing the safety

devices need be told.

From every account, Hajianpour was a kind, giving young man with

bright plans for the future. His loss diminishes the Glendale community.

The News-Press staff extends its deepest condolences to Hamoon

Hajianpour's family, as well as our deepest sympathies to the faculty and

students of Hoover High School.
