DOWNTOWN -- Three winners are expected to be chosen from among area

high school students in this year's traffic safety art contest, sponsored

by the Glendale Police Department.

"It's a great way to get kids thinking about traffic safety," said

Glendale Police Traffic Officer David Buckley.

High school students were asked to convey the theme "Pedestrian

Safety" and were allowed to used any type of media - from pen and ink to

paints - to express it.

Traffic Sgt. Lewie Guay was impressed by this year's 15 contest

entries.

"There's some really good artists," he said. "They really put some

thought into it."

Guay said he hopes to name the winners at Tuesday's City Council

meeting, but that has not been confirmed.

The top three winning entries will be reproduced and placed in various

spots throughout the city. First-, second- and third-place winners will

receive cash awards. First place will get $300; second place, $200; and

third place will take home $100.

Cash prizes will also be awarded to the winning students'teacher for

class art supplies, Guay said.
