Boasting a great pride for her club, Sylvia Simeon was installed for a

second term as president of the Women's Athletic Club of Glendale.

One of her favorite memories from her first year as president was the

75th birthday celebration in September.

"The history of the club was read by Anne King," she said. "I'm very

proud the club has lasted that long."

The seven sports departments still carry a good share of members.

Although some of the members are now in their 70s and 80s and don't play,

the golf group still gets together for lunch.

"They all enjoy each other's company," Simeon said. "And the Hiking

Department keeps on growing. I think there are 40 members now."

Simeon, has been a member of the club for 23 years. She is active with

the Badminton Department and goes to the exercise class on Saturday

mornings at the clubhouse.

She says the best part of being a member is the friendships she has

made.

Joining her on the board are Betty Viggiano, first vice president;

Elisabeth Allwelt, second vice president; Carol Hart, third vice

president; Barbara Dalzell, recording secretary; and Carole Pedder,

treasurer.

Directors are Charle Bennison, sports; Allene Davis, finance; Doris

Biggs, membership; and Kay Boisvert, bulletin.

A scholarship of $1,500 was presented to Glendale Community College

student Ruthnaomi Manchan of Los Angeles. The daughter of Ricardo and

Maria Manchan, Ruthnaomi plans to become an athletic trainer. In addition

to her school work, she assists the coaching staff at GCC and is coach of

the Track and Field Club at Roosevelt Middle School.

Awards were presented to members Fornia Fill, 3 par golf; Carol

Pedder, aqua gym; and Alene Shaibi, hiking.

Korea Duffy won the drawing for an original painting donated by a

member.

The club raised more than $2,000 for their charities this year.

Receiving funds are the Salvation Army, YWCA, Ahead With Horses, American

Red Cross, Adult Day Care Center for Alzheimer's patients and Midnight

Mission in Los Angeles.

Coordinating the tea were Charle Bennison and Catherine Taft.

Decorations committee members were Ruth Gillis, Ruth Cordon and Kathy

Williams.

The club was founded in 1924. Members can enroll in one or several of

the seven sports departments. They are aqua-gym, badminton, bowling,

Brookside golf, 3-par golf, hiking and mannequin. Organized play is

scheduled throughout the week. Meetings are held at the club house at 600

S. Verdugo Road.
