The seven sports departments still carry a good share of members.
Although some of the members are now in their 70s and 80s and don't play,
the golf group still gets together for lunch.
"They all enjoy each other's company," Simeon said. "And the Hiking
Department keeps on growing. I think there are 40 members now."
Simeon, has been a member of the club for 23 years. She is active with
the Badminton Department and goes to the exercise class on Saturday
mornings at the clubhouse.
She says the best part of being a member is the friendships she has
made.
Joining her on the board are Betty Viggiano, first vice president;
Elisabeth Allwelt, second vice president; Carol Hart, third vice
president; Barbara Dalzell, recording secretary; and Carole Pedder,
treasurer.
Directors are Charle Bennison, sports; Allene Davis, finance; Doris
Biggs, membership; and Kay Boisvert, bulletin.
A scholarship of $1,500 was presented to Glendale Community College
student Ruthnaomi Manchan of Los Angeles. The daughter of Ricardo and
Maria Manchan, Ruthnaomi plans to become an athletic trainer. In addition
to her school work, she assists the coaching staff at GCC and is coach of
the Track and Field Club at Roosevelt Middle School.
Awards were presented to members Fornia Fill, 3 par golf; Carol
Pedder, aqua gym; and Alene Shaibi, hiking.
Korea Duffy won the drawing for an original painting donated by a
member.
The club raised more than $2,000 for their charities this year.
Receiving funds are the Salvation Army, YWCA, Ahead With Horses, American
Red Cross, Adult Day Care Center for Alzheimer's patients and Midnight
Mission in Los Angeles.
Coordinating the tea were Charle Bennison and Catherine Taft.
Decorations committee members were Ruth Gillis, Ruth Cordon and Kathy
Williams.
The club was founded in 1924. Members can enroll in one or several of
the seven sports departments. They are aqua-gym, badminton, bowling,
Brookside golf, 3-par golf, hiking and mannequin. Organized play is
scheduled throughout the week. Meetings are held at the club house at 600
S. Verdugo Road.
