Death penalty sought in Gupta murder case

June 29, 2000

PASADENA - Prosecutors will seek the death penalty for a man accused

of the strangling death of a pregnant Glendale woman.

The official announcement was made in Pasadena Superior Court on

Wednesday, although the attorney for Dr. Kevin Paul Anderson was notified

by letter June 8, said a spokeswoman for the L.A. County district

attorney's office.

Anderson is accused of strangling Dr. Deepti Gupta, 33, on Nov. 11 in

the Angeles National Forest and pushing her SUV off of cliff.

Anderson, a 41-year-old neonatologist, and Gupta, a pediatrician, had

planned to open a practice together but the deal had fallen through,

prosecutors said.

Officials had said the soured deal was a motive for the murder, but

prosecutorial evidence submitted to the grand jury in January suggested

the colleagues were having an affair and Gupta had threatened to tell

Anderson's wife. Anderson of La Verne was indicted on a capital murder

charge in January.
