Fun on the Fourth

July 04, 2000

Alexa Capeloto

The following are Fourth of July events happening around the region:

LA CRESCENTA

At Crescenta Valley High School, the Crescenta Valley Chamber of

Commerce is throwing its 12th annual Fourth of July fireworks show.

Starting at 4 p.m. today, and for $7 admission (children under 5 are

free), celebrants will have access to a virtual amusement park: 10 rides,

food stands (including Subway sandwiches and Domino's pizza) and live

music from the band Swing Incorporated.

Of course the party can't end without fireworks, scheduled for 9:15

p.m. over the high school's football field. Pyrotechnist Chuck Hughes,

who operated the show from 1995 to 1999, said the La Crescenta fireworks

show is about four times larger than the average small town show, with

residents from as far as Lancaster traveling to see it. This year's

pyrotechnist will be Robert Hutchins.

SUNLAND-TUJUNGA

For more than 40 years now, the Sunland-Tujunga Rotary Club has

organized its Fourth of July community parade. All residents are welcome

to enter the parade with anything from baby carriages to antique cars.

Local politicians including state Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Glendale) and

Assemblyman Jack Scott (D-La Crescenta) are expected to take part.

The parade starts at 10 a.m. today at the corner of Mt. Gleason Avenue

and Foothill Boulevard and will work its way toward Sunland Park, where

an outdoor all-day party will be waiting.

Rotary Club President Joe Eiben said the park festivities will include

food vendors, a moon bounce for kids and live music bands. The

Sunland-Tujunga Chamber of Commerce also plans to open a 25-year-old

community time capsule. Thanks to local business sponsorship, the parade

and park festivities are free of charge.

The park party ends at 5 p.m., plenty of time to get to a twilight

fireworks show at Verdugo High School. Doors open at 6 p.m. for live

music and food vendors. Adults are $6, children 5-12 $5, and kids under 5

are free.

BURBANK

In Burbank, the big event tonight will be the "All-American

Celebration" at the Starlight Bowl. Burbank's Parks and Recreation has

planned a night of live music and fireworks to entertain the public.

Gates open at the amphitheater at 6 p.m. for those who are planning an

evening picnic. Then at 6:30, music bands including The Jokesters, The

Alley Cats and Fife & Drum Trio take the stage. Headlining the show will

be The Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra and Bill's Lucky Stars. The fireworks

are scheduled for 9:30 p.m.
