DOWNTOWN -- The Glendale Central Library treated 40 visitors to a

reception and a "mini" training session on its 49 computers.

The Saturday presentation of the machines were courtesy of a grant

from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which will supply three years

of tech support.

Glendale's library system applied for a grant in December. One of the

main stipulations was that a public library serve 10% or greater

population of low-income families. Under the grant, Glendale's library

system received 31 computers that were distributed to three sites. An

additional 18 machines were later purchased at a special rate.

"I find it amazing by June we could do a fine job of providing

Internet and word processing to the public in such a timely fashion,'

said Chuck Wike, Glendale Library community relations manager.

The library will offer a series of free classes in the fall to teach

the public how to use the equipment.
