LA CRESCENTA -- Mothers with young children or mothers whose children

are grown can test whether the pen is mightier than the sword at a new

"Mothers Write" creative writing workshop.

The six-week workshop is scheduled for Monday evenings from 7 to 9:30

p.m. starting this Monday, and sessions will continue through June. The

cost is $130 per session and will be held at the Unitarian Universalist

Church of the Verdugo Hills, 4451 Dunsmore Ave., La Crescenta.

Workshop leader Alison Brett is trained and certified in the Amherst

Writers and Artists method of Creative Writing Workshop Leadership. For

more information on the method log on to www.amherstwriters.com. Brett

will use different writing exercises to help trigger the creative

process.

"I was targeting mothers because this group spends so much time

nurturing others that writing is a powerful way to nurture themselves,"

she said.

Writers will be asked to write during the session and share their

material if they want. Feedback will be limited to responses to the work

-- things the class remembers or likes about the written piece. Those who

wanted more a more detailed critique can turn in a manuscript to be

distributed to other class mates and discussed.

Brett can help writers do submissions for publication, and also help

writers tap into their creative selves.

Brett will also hold a writing retreat for pregnant women "A Pregnant

Pause" scheduled for Oct. 7. The retreat will be held 9:30 a.m. to 4:30

p.m.. The fee is $80 which includes lunch. It will be also be held at the

Unitarian Universalist Church. To register call Alison Brett at 957-8158.
