CITY HALL -- Glendale will receive $30,000 from the state as part of a

program to reduce pedestrian fatalities and injuries.

California Gov. Gray Davis announced Thursday the awarding of $10

million in traffic safety grants for Los Angeles and Orange County

communities and another $49 million in the rest of the state.

The Glendale Police Department will use the money to do a series of

public safety commercials on pedestrian, bicycle, skateboard, and scooter

safety. The commercials will be distributed to local television and cable

networks and eventually to the national media, said Lt. Donald Meredith,

traffic bureau commander. They will also be shown during community

meetings.

Many cities conduct safety program such as DUI checkpoints, traffic

safety seminars and distribution of child safety seats among low-income

residents.

Among neighboring cities, Burbank received $24,000 and Pasadena got

$55,000.

The grants are aimed at reducing California's death rate from 1.19

people per 100 million miles driven to 1 per 100 million miles by 2001.
