Golf tourney helps more kids go to camp

September 19, 2000

Golfers got in a round of 18 holes Friday, took home super prizes to

improve their game, and can feel a little less guilty for taking the

afternoon off knowing they've helped send some 20,000 children and

families to camp.

More than 110 friends of the YMCA of Glendale participated in the

annual golf invitational tourney at Brookside Golf Course. The event

raised $30,000, which will allow more people to have a camping experience

at the residence camps on Catalina Island -- Camp Fox and Whites Cove.

About 10% of the youth who attend summer camp need and receive

financial assistance, says Bob Driffill, chief executive officer.

Camp, he adds, is the best venue for youngsters to learn positive

values like caring, respect, honesty and responsibility. Learning values

increases the chances of youngsters gaining self-worth and self-respect.

The result, Y officials hope, is to build strong kids, strong families

and ultimately strong communities.

Again, the grand sponsors of the golf tourney were Glendale Motor Car

Dealers. This is the second year of their five-year grand sponsor

commitment, says Craig Yaussi, financial development director.

Volunteer committee members who helped organize the day were Tom

Sullivan, chairman; Gordon Martin, Ted Dondanville, Paul Brodsky and Ed

Gredvig. Also helping were Y staff and other volunteers.

Top winners were first low gross Chris Smith, Chuck Leomone, Mike

Langan and Jim Stead; second low gross Dondanville, D.J. Anawalt, Grant

Muir and John Wortman; first low net Al Alonso, Armen Karapatian, Dennis

Krondsk and Frank Le Blanc. second low net Driffill, Mike Cole, Gredvig

and Dave Rice; third low net Dwayne Bickett, Mark Martin, Jay Thomas and

Gordon Martin.

KFWB sports anchor Eric Tracy not only served as the master of

ceremonies of the dinner, but offered each foursome a courtesy swing as

the official Mulligan Man.

Silent and live auctions continued through the buffet dinner.

David Dobbs of Red Carpet Wine and Spirits in Glendale, took home

airline tickets for two to anywhere United flies as well as a Giant Golf

driver worth $250. He said he plans to take his wife, Tamera, to Hawaii.

He was the guest of Citizens Business Bank in Glendale.

Dondanville of San Gabriel took home a set of Giant Golf clubs after a

outbidding several of his buddies. Bob Cannon of Thousand Oaks will be

spending more time on the greens, as he offered the highest bid for play

days at Annandalle Country Club and Lakeside Golf Club. Mike Clapp of

Allen Lund Co. in La Canada Flintridge won the drawing for the Catalina

trip. He just attended his first family camp with his wife and children

over the Labor Day holiday.

I'm not talking about my game, but my partner, Ed Messler, did

fabulously. The whole day was a lot of fun. I guess the most important

thing I learned is that practice builds a stronger game.
