GLENDALE -- New Horizons Family Center raised more than $50,000 at its

annual gala to help fund after-school activities for area students,

officials said Monday.

"It was the best year that we've had," center Director Maria Rochart

said. "It completes the budget for this year."

Nearly 500 people turned out for the 6th annual gala, which was held

in Los Angeles on Saturday. The black-tie event featured everything from

violinists to salsa dancers, Rochart said.

At last year's gala, New Horizons raised about $40,000, she said.

Several well-known figures attended the event, Rochart said. They

included Glendale Mayor Dave Weaver, Assemblyman Scott Wildman

(D-Glendale) and the two candidates hoping to fill his soon-to-be-open

seat, Republican Craig Missakian and Democrat Dario Frommer.

Former Glendale Mayor Larry Zarian and his family, along with the

Grijalva family, which owns Joselito's Mexican Restaurant in Montrose,

received Family of the Year awards. Gary Hopkins was named Man of the

Year.

"It's nice to have role models," Rochart said.
