September 27, 2000

SACRAMENTO -- The California Department of Education has set up a

child-care connection hotline to provide a way for parents to find

quality child care.

Through research, the department has found that children enrolled in

child care have greater academic success, improved self-esteem and

increased school attendance, and there is a decrease rate of vandalism in

and around the schools.

By calling (800) 543-7793, California parents can speak with a

child-care specialist to find:

* Where to find child care in your community (for infants, toddler,

preschool, before- and after-school care)

* What to look for when seeking a positive child-care environment.

* How parents can make the best choices for their child.
