DOWNTOWN -- Glendale Police spent almost 20 minutes Monday afternoon

searching for a boy suspected of driving a stolen car.

The 16-year-old Los Angeles resident, whose name was not released

because he is a minor, allegedly ran from an officer and into some bushes

along the 100 block of West Wilson Street.

He was found a few minutes later by security guards at a building in

the 100 block of North Brand Boulevard, police said.

An officer stopped the boy at shortly after 3 p.m. at Brand Boulevard

and California Avenue after seeing him make an illegal turn, Police Sgt.

Rick Young said.

"The officer asked him to turn off the car and then he noticed there

were no keys in the ignition," Young said.

The boy then allegedly drove away from the officer and abandoned the

car, running into the bushes but leaving his shoes behind. Officers

surrounded the area and a police helicopter flew overhead, searching for

the boy, who was wearing a yellow shirt. Security guards at a nearby

building found the boy, who had removed his shirt and tucked it into his

pants, Young said.

The car the boy was driving, a Toyota sedan, was reported stolen to

the LAPD in Van Nuys, Young said.
