Last week's 6.8-magnitude earthquake that rocked Seattle served as an

important reminder that we, too, are vulnerable to a catastrophic

temblor.

According to city officials, local government agencies are ready to

handle a major earthquake, but concern was expressed that many residents

are not as prepared.

Is the water heater in your home braced for an earthquake? Do you know

where the gas shut-off valve is located? Do you have an earthquake

preparedness kit in a closet or in your car? At the very least, have you

discussed with your family what do in the event of a major earthquake?

These aren't academic questions. We live in a multi-fault region and

having an earthquake on the scale of Seattle's or greater is not a matter

of if, but when. Preparing for the next big shaker is a matter of life

and death.

BE PREPARED

The city provides free earthquake preparedness training. Information
