No surprise, Cervenka McCauley lead CV to win

GLENDORA -- About the only hazard of playing behind a pitcher as

unhittable as Meredith Cervenka is that, as a fielder, you're just not

going to get a whole lot of opportunities to make plays.

Mel McCauley, the third baseman on the Crescenta Valley softball team,

will tell you as much.

win at Glendora High on Tuesday was at the plate.

So, taking into account that it was, after all, her 17th birthday,

McCauley went ahead and made the difference against the Tratans.

She smacked her first career over-the-fence home run into left

centerfield in the top of the first, in the process driving home leadoff

hitter Sarah Sherman for the game's only scoring.

Sherman, who only recently recovered from a broken arm, had reached

base after being hit in the helmet with the game's first pitch -- which

was delayed a half hour because the Falcons' bus knocked mirrors with a

truck on the way to the game.

The minor collision broke the mirror on the left side of the bus,

which caused CV (4-1) to pull off the freeway, get on another bus,

describe to the highway patrol what happened and then
