Marathon returns to Griffith Park Sunday

GRIFFITH PARK -- Thousands of people are expected to turn out Sunday

for a few hours of panting and sweating -- for the annual Jimmy Stewart

Relay Marathon.

The marathon, which has a 26-mile relay for adult teams, a

quarter-mile race for kids and a 5-mile celebrity relay, is marking its

20th year since being started by its namesake to benefit St. John's Child

and Family Development Center in Santa Monica.

This year, more than 3,000 runners were registered by Wednesday

morning, with hundreds more expected to sign up by Sunday.

Actor Robert Wagner is scheduled to host the event in Griffith Park.

The adult relay starts at 8 a.m., with a corporate entry fee of $500

and nonprofit fee of $125. Youths from 6 months to 9 years of age can

enter the children's races that start at 8:15 a.m. for $15. The celebrity

relay starts at 10:30 a.m.

Teams can register from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the race site in

Griffith Park, and until 6:30 a.m. Sunday.
