Tologs cruise to victory

ALHAMBRA -- Their offensive rustiness had been compartmentalized to

the early innings Monday.

What concerned Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy softball Coach George

Tibbetts was how his team would adjust to facing live pitching for the

first time in 17 days.

The Tologs recorded one hit in that time frame, but they managed to

capitalize on four first-inning errors en route to a 7-1 nonleague

victory over host Ramona Convent on Monday.

"All you can do is put the ball in play and see what happens,"

Tibbetts said. "We practiced during the two-week spring break and we got

some people healthy. We were rusty offensively the first three innings,

and now I think we got the rust out.

That should bode well for the Tologs (8-7). Flintridge Sacred Heart

will play six Mission League games in a 13-day span, beginning with a

road game against Louisville on Wednesday at Tarzana Park.

The Tologs finished with four hits Monday, including two by first

baseman Lacey Smale.

It didn't matter, since Ramona Convent (6-8) booted several routine

fielding chances, allowing the floodgates to open.

Tibbetts couldn't have predicted the chain of events.

"When you play out of your league, you can't predict what will

happen," Tibbetts said. "The pitching was a little slower than what we

face in league, and our better hitters adjusted to their pitcher."

Smale, Jackie Fisher, Caroline Hugar and Robyn Giannotta each drove in

a run for the Tologs, who last played a league game April 6 against

Flintridge Sacred Heart starting pitcher Adrian Herlache (6-6) struck

out five and scattered four hits in a complete-game effort.
