JOHN BERNARD BURNS

John Bernard Burns, 84, a longtime La Crescenta resident, died April

8, 2001.

Mr. Burns was born in Kansas. After graduating from Burlington High

School, he served in the U.S. Navy in 1934 to 1938, and rejoined in 1942

to serve during World War II with the U.S. Navy Air Corps. He flew in the

South Pacific in the Philippines. He continued in the Naval Reserves at

Los Alamitos following the war.

He was a teacher's aide at Crescenta Valley High School, wrote

articles for the editorial and opinion page in the Glendale News-Press

and the Foothill Leader, and was active in Cub Scout Pack 316 and Boy

Scout Troop 16.

Prior to retiring, he was a sheet metal engineer for G.C. Breidert Co.

in Pacoima.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; children, David of La Crescenta,

Debra Plummer of Los Angeles, and Devin of Simi Valley; brother, Larry of

Colorado; and sister, Loretta, of Colorado.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the the La

Crescenta Presbyterian Church.

NORMAN W. FOWLES

Norman W. Fowles, a former Glendale resident, died Jan. 29, 2001, in a

Valencia hospital.

Mr. Fowles was born Jan. 28, 1932, in Los Angeles. He served in the

U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Prior to retiring, he was a long-distance driver for Farmer Bros.

Coffee.

He is survived by his wife, Bettye of Santa Clarita; daughters, Debra

J. Holmes of Glendale and Danielle Weir of Castaic; and son, Edward W. of

Surfside Beach.

A private service was held in Santa Barbara.
