SUNLAND -- Indulgence mixed with a good cause: That's the recipe on

Wednesday evening, when Baskin-Robbins' "Free Scoop Night" takes place

for a few delicious hours.

The evening is a combination promotional bonanza for the ice cream

company and fund-raiser for an organization called First Book, which

provides low-income children with reading material.

For ice cream lovers, the deal is simple. Stores will give away scoops

of ice cream from 6 to 10 p.m. And for every scoop of ice cream consumed

by customers, Baskin-Robbins will make a donation to First Book.

Also piggybacking on the event is DreamWorks, which has linked its

upcoming movie, "Shrek," with ice cream and literacy. DreamWorks has

pledged to match Baskin-Robbins' donations to First Book on Free Scoop

Night.

For the release of the film, Baskin-Robbins has released a pair of

"Shrek"-related ice cream flavors: Shrek Swirl and Shrek'd Out Chocolate

Mint, which the company's Web site says is full of "green goo."

THE SCOOP ON FREE SCOOPS

Baskin-Robbins locations that will have free scoops include:

8700 Foothill Blvd., Sunland
