Letters - Steve Clough

May 09, 2001

I have been following the letters in the Glendale News-Press Community

Forum for the past several months.

After reading an article ("Old Glory to fly at half-staff"), on the

front page of the paper April 18, regarding Glendale Mayor Gus Gomez

signing a proclamation ordering the city to lower the American flag to

half-staff to commemorate the Armenian Genocide, I felt compelled to

write this letter.

It appears that Mayor Gomez and other council members who have

supported lowering the American flag have failed to think this act

through.

The act of lowering the flag is, in itself, discriminatory, as it

gives preferential treatment to a specific and ethnic group. The act of

lowering the flag will not unite this city but will divide it.

What concerns me most is that Mayor Gomez and other council members

appear to have allowed their emotions to make their decision and have

failed to make a decision on what is best for Glendale.

If the mayor and council members made this decision, what kind of

decisions can we expect from them in the future?
