GRIFFITH PARK -- While some residents will be cleaning city streets

Saturday for the Great Graffiti Paint Out and Community Cleanup, others

will be gathering debris from the Los Angeles River.

"Every little bit helps keep the trash from getting to the beaches and

into the ocean," said Jill Hill, spokeswoman for Friends of the Los

Angeles River, which is sponsoring the half-day cleanup.

Residents are asked to put on work gloves, old clothes and sturdy

shoes Saturday morning to help pull everything from plastic bags to

shopping carts from the river area around Bette Davis Park in Griffith

Park.

If the plastic and metal items can be salvaged, they will be recycled,

Hill said. The rest will be hauled away.

Cleanup crews will meet at 11 sites along the river Saturday morning.
