Letter -- Elen Asatryan

May 21, 2001

After reading your paper every day, I can't help but notice how angry

certain residents of Glendale are about the lowering of the flag on April

24 in remembrance of the Armenian Genocide.

I don't think these people understand how their letters poison

impressionable young minds with their racist comments and disrespectful

insensitivity.

As an 18-year-old high school senior, every day I hear at school and

at home how discrimination and racism should not be tolerated and that we

should respect others around us.

My point is that a large number of Glendale residents are Armenians.

For those who are so against the flag lowering, stop for a moment and try

to feel and understand what your Armenian neighbor is feeling.

Knock on his door and ask to be taught about the Armenian culture and

genocide instead of being ignorant and bringing more hatred into the

community.

This nation was built by immigrants, and such disrespect toward a

group of people is not acceptable.
