July 07, 2001

GLENDALE -- At California Federal Bank, the customer is king. At least

for a day.

CalFed, to show its appreciation to customers throughout California

and Nevada, is hosting "Customer is King Day" on Friday at more 350

branches, including four in Glendale.

Glendale branches at 414 N. Central Ave., 401 N. Brand Blvd., 700 N.

Brand Blvd. and 1201 N. Central Ave. are putting on daylong celebrations

that will including product giveaways and incentives, drawings and

refreshments. "They want to make a statement in their communities that

the customer is really important," said Nina Forman, a CalFed public

relations consultant. "They want to celebrate their customers and thank

them for their commitment and their business."

Each branch is expected to have a different theme and decide on its

own food and entertainment.

"It's however [the branch manager and employees] want to respond to

their community," Forman said.

The CalFed branch at 414 N. Central Ave. will offer the largest of the

local celebrations, complete with a picnic atmosphere and an appearance

by Elvis Schmiedekamp, CalFed's head of customer service and the man at

the center of the bank's advertising campaign.

Schmiedekamp will pull up in a 1969 Cadillac Coupe de Ville and hand

out T-shirts.
