Benesh -- the News-Press 1998 All-Area co-Player of the Year -- has

competed in all 16 matches and 56 of 58 games for the Mustangs, recording

100 kills, 57 digs and 50 blocks.

Brynne Young (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2000) sophomore

defensive specialist, University of San Diego women's volleyball --

Young's statistics are far from the eye-popping numbers she put up for

the Tologs, but they're incredibly effective.

Through 17 matches and 55 of the team's 64 games, Young -- a two-time

News-Press All-Area selection -- hasn't recorded a kill, or a block, and

tallied just one ace.

But her 90 digs ranks fifth on the team as the Toreros -- winners of

seven straight matches -- are 14-3, 5-0 in the West Coast Conference

entering a crucial home showdown at 7 tonight against Pepperdine (10-2,

5-0 in conference).

Erin Broadwell (La Canada, 1998) senior forward, Cal State Northridge

women's soccer -- The Matadors are 8-2-2, 2-1-1 in the Big West

Conference entering Sunday's match at the University of the Pacific, and

Broadwell has continued add to the CSUN record books.

The program's all-time leader in both goals and points, Broadwell

scored both goals -- including her second match-winner of the season --

in a 2-1 win against UC Riverside on Oct. 7.

Broadwell is tied for first on the team with four goals and is second

with nine points, and ranks in the top three in both shots (21) and shots

on goal (12).

Shannon Clissold (Crescenta Valley, 2001) freshman midfielder, Cal

State Northridge women's soccer -- While Broadwell's career is winding

down, with just five more regular-season matches remaining, Clissold

continues to demonstrate the skills that should make for an exciting

future for the Matadors.

In Sunday's 2-0 win against UC Santa Barbara, Clissold recorded her

first collegiate point, assisting on a second-half goal to Lisa Gouveia.

Clissold, who sat out her senior season at CV because of a leg

fracture, continues to be the best comeback story of the year as she has

played in 10 of the team's 12 matches and recorded five shots.

Jeff Riddell (La Canada, 1999) redshirt sophomore defensive back,

Whitworth College (Wash.) football -- Although the Pirates aren't ranked

in the NCAA Division III national top 25 poll, they're getting closer

with every win.

Following Saturday's 17-14 victory against Willamette (Ore.) -- its

first since 1988 -- Whitworth improved to 4-0, 2-0 in the Northwest

Conference, with Riddell continuing to be a strong presence at free

safety.

Entering a 1 p.m. showdown today against Puget Sound (0-5, 0-2 in

conference), Riddell has 19 tackles, one interception and one forced

fumble for the Pirates, who are off to their best start since 1990.
