Letter -- Janet Petersen

October 29, 2001

Who took the music out of the Verdugo Days Parade? For 30 years, we've

gone to the parade to hear some inspiring marching music. Over the past

10 years, there has been a decrease in music and an increase in drill

teams and drums. No wonder no one goes to the parade!

This is a good time to showcase our local schools' music programs.

Don't young people want to learn any instruments other than drums? The

only real music we heard were the bagpipers, who played and played while

marching down Brand Boulevard. They know what makes a parade!

At this time of national crisis, stirring patriotic music was

certainly expected. We came home and put on John Phillip Sousa music.

Now, that's a parade. This was our last Verdugo Days until we hear the

music is back!
