Pollen has residents anxious

GLENDALE -- Pollen, not anthrax, had residents worried earlier this

week.

The yellow, powdery pollen wound up on city sidewalks and other

stationary items with Tuesday's rain, which was the first of the season.

But about 20 residents called Glendale Police and other city offices,

fearing the powder might be harmful. Their fears are believed to be

sparked by recent East Coast cases of anthrax, which was often carried in

a white powder form.

"It happens every year. Rain washes the pollen out of trees ... and

into gutters," said John Vos, public works maintenance services

administrator. "It's mostly from pines and other conifers."

Police said officers responded to most of the calls the department

received Tuesday about the pollen discoveries.
