"Shrek" honored with eight awards

GLENDALE -- DreamWorks' "Shrek" was an eight time winner at the 29th

annual Annie Awards for outstanding achievement in animation. The black

tie ceremony took place at the Alex Theatre Saturday night.

Presented by the ASIFA-Hollywood, the International Animated Film

Society, the Annie Awards recognize the best and brightest in the

animation industry. Awards are given across 26 categories covering

feature films, television programming and commercials, home videos,

electronic media, and short subjects/special projects. Categories range

from directing, writing, voice acting and storyboarding to effects,

production design, music score and song.

"Shrek" the animated movie about an ogre who battles an evil prince to

get his swamp back, had 12 nominations. The movie won for achievement in

an animated theatrical feature, and individual achievements for effects

animation, directing in an animation feature, music score, production

design, storyboarding and writing. In addition, voice actor Eddie Murphy

won an award for his performance as the voice of the Donkey.

Walt Disney Feature Animation's "The Emperor's New Groove" had 11

nominations and received three awards. The movie's awards included voice

acting by a female performer, which went to Eartha Kitt who did the voice

of Yzma, and an award for the song "Perfect World" by David Hartley and

Sting.

Overall, Walt Disney Feature Animation earned 17 nominations, While

Warner Bros. Animation (features only) and DreamWorks (including

Dreamworks/PDI) each garnered 13.

Noted film historian and critic, Leonard Maltin, was also honored at

the ceremony with the June Foray Award. The award is given to an

individual for significant and benevolent contribution to the art and

industry of animation.
