GLENDALE -- When the judges called her name as the second-place

contest winner for her photography, Audrey Ma thought back to how nervous

she had been at her first piano recital.

"When they called my name, I was so surprised. My heart hadn't pumped

like that since my sixth-grade piano recital," laughed Audrey, a

17-year-old Glendale resident whose photography earned her a $1,000

second-place award and artwork a $250 honorable mention at the 2002 Music

Center Spotlight Award Visual Arts Competitions.

Audrey's painting is a dry brushing on top of a textured under

painting of curved lines and musical notes. Her photograph is a

black-and-white image of a friend playing a guitar.

Audrey, a Glendale resident who attends Immaculate Heart High School

in Hollywood, was one of several Glendale youth who were awarded at

Sunday's Music Center reception in Santa Monica.

Peter Sriployrung, a 15-year-old sophomore at Clark Magnet High

School, won first place in the drawing and painting contest and walked

away with a $1,500 prize.

Peter's drawing is an earth-toned, colored-pencil sketch of a cello

with tree limbs for arms that is playing itself with a bow.

"When I was young, I always drew, just for fun. I never really thought

about it but always enjoyed it," Peter said. "I don't really have any

other interests besides art. I want to go to an art college in New York

City, hopefully."

Other Spotlight honorable mentions for drawing and painting were

presented to Anna Firsova, 17, of Glendale High School and Eunice Park,

15, of La Canada High School.
