Karamalian keeps Tornadoes alive

February 02, 2002

Charles Rich

NORTHWEST GLENDALE -- Alan Karamalian said he wasn't threatened.

The Hoover High boys' basketball center can't afford to be with the

Tornadoes chasing in earnest a CIF Southern Section Division IAA playoff

spot.

Karamalian established an inside presence and scored a season-high 30

points to lead Hoover to a 73-47 Pacific League home victory against

Arcadia on Friday night. He also added a team-high 12 rebounds to pull

Hoover (10-13, 2-6 in league) to within one victory of qualifying for the

playoffs, which begin later this month.

Thanks to Karamalian, the Tornadoes control their own destiny with

league games left against visiting Crescenta Valley on Tuesday and host

Glendale on Thursday.

"It's great that we only have to help ourselves," Karamalian said. "I

couldn't feel threatened because I felt stronger and comfortable inside

the paint. This was our best league game."

Karamalian capped his breakout game with a three-point basket in the

final minute to help Hoover complete a two-game season series sweep

against Arcadia (12-12, 0-8 in league).

The Tornadoes, who never trailed, received 23 points and six assists

from guard Haik Stepanyan. Teammate Armen Baghdasarian added 11 points

and nine rebounds to send the reeling Apaches to their eighth consecutive

loss.

Hoover exacted some revenge against the Apaches, who eliminated the

Tornadoes from playoff contention last season.

"We haven't played well in league so far and we can't afford to look

past anybody," Hoover Coach Kirt Kohlmeier said. "We made some mistakes,

but we needed Alan to get involved on offense. We need an inside threat

so teams can't always key on Armen and Haik."

Stepanyan and Baghdasarian combined for five three-point baskets in

the third quarter. Stepanyan's third three-point basket gave the

Tornadoes a 49-35 late in the third quarter.
