Hoover (10-13, 2-6 in league) to within one victory of qualifying for the
playoffs, which begin later this month.
Thanks to Karamalian, the Tornadoes control their own destiny with
league games left against visiting Crescenta Valley on Tuesday and host
Glendale on Thursday.
"It's great that we only have to help ourselves," Karamalian said. "I
couldn't feel threatened because I felt stronger and comfortable inside
the paint. This was our best league game."
Karamalian capped his breakout game with a three-point basket in the
final minute to help Hoover complete a two-game season series sweep
against Arcadia (12-12, 0-8 in league).
The Tornadoes, who never trailed, received 23 points and six assists
from guard Haik Stepanyan. Teammate Armen Baghdasarian added 11 points
and nine rebounds to send the reeling Apaches to their eighth consecutive
Hoover exacted some revenge against the Apaches, who eliminated the
Tornadoes from playoff contention last season.
"We haven't played well in league so far and we can't afford to look
past anybody," Hoover Coach Kirt Kohlmeier said. "We made some mistakes,
but we needed Alan to get involved on offense. We need an inside threat
so teams can't always key on Armen and Haik."
Stepanyan and Baghdasarian combined for five three-point baskets in
the third quarter. Stepanyan's third three-point basket gave the
Tornadoes a 49-35 late in the third quarter.
