Local artists picked for art training

CITY HALL -- A dozen local artists have been selected by the city's

Arts and Culture Commission to participate in a professional training

program to teach arts education to Glendale elementary school students.

The artists have backgrounds in singing, dancing, theater, painting,

drawing, animation and woodworking.

Those selected and their respective disciplines are: Malia Oliver,

Banafsheh Sayyad and Erin Schon (dance); Sheryl Carlin and Mike Mahaney

(music/voice); Gail Shapiro (theater); Richard Brandt, Dee Farnsworth,

Lynda Angelica N. Reyes, Ann Marie K. Smith and Cindy Vargas (visual

art); and Rhoydon Shishido (visual art and animation).

Participants are being trained by the Music Center Education Division

to teach workshops and serve as artists-in-residence at local schools.

The artists, their specialties and credentials will be published in a

arts education resource directory and distributed to schools later this

month.

The training program is funded by a grant received by the California

Arts Council to implement a series of arts education demonstration

projects.

The commission is a branch of the Parks, Recreation and Community

Development Division.
