GCC Hall of Fame inductions Sunday

NORTHEAST GLENDALE -- Former Vaquero star athletes Donna Mayhew and

Carl Boldt are among those who will be inducted into the Glendale

Community College Hall of Fame during the Inaugural Glendale College

Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Banquet at 4 p.m. Sunday at

the Glendale Community College's J.W. Smith Student Center.

Mayhew, an Olympian and a state champion in the women's javelin throw,

and Boldt, twice an All-Western State Conference men's basketball

selection and former NBA player, will receive Outstanding Athlete honors.

Chuck Gibson will be inducted as a coach, after mentoring several

championship-caliber tennis players. Cathy Ferguson, a two-time gold

medalist in swimming, will receive the Pillar of Achievement honor.

Walt Smith, who was dean of Student Athletics at GCC for 37 years,

will get the Meritorious honor.

The 1985 football squad, which was ranked No. 5 in the nation after

winning the Western State Conference title and the Potato Bowl

Championship, will be inducted as a team.

The Hall of Fame is meant to honor former athletes and teams that

achieved excellence through competition, coaches who have made a

difference in the lives of their athletes, and supporters of the athletic

program.
