NORTHEAST GLENDALE -- Glendale Police are looking for a hit-and-run

driver who struck an 8-year-old girl when she ran out from between two

parked cars during her lunch recess.

The girl was walking on Glenoaks Boulevard near Waltonia Drive at

about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday -- lunchtime at nearby Glenoaks Elementary

School, Officer David Gillispie said.

She darted out into the street from between two parked cars into the

path of a white sewer pump truck, police said. The driver swerved but hit

the girl, then continued driving west on Glenoaks Boulevard, police said.

She was taken to the hospital with a broken leg and possible neck

injuries, Gillispie said.

The investigation into the accident is continuing, he added.

"People need to use this example to teach their kids how to step out

into the street," Glendale Police Officer Randy Petersen said.

About 17 pedestrians have been hit so far this year in Glendale. In a

similar incident Feb. 15, two children walking home from school were hit

by an SUV after they darted out from between two parked cars, police

said.

Last year, there were 120 incidents in which pedestrians were struck

by cars, and three people were killed.
