Community may soon use new library

March 18, 2002

Marshall Allen

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- The new library at La Canada High School could

be open for public use as soon as April 15.

The library, which is officially called the Information Resource

Center, opened in early February and will be shared by the La Canada

Unified School District and the city. An agreement approved by the school

board in its Tuesday meeting has the facility open to the public

beginning April 15. The hours would be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and

Thursdays, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

The agreement still needs to be approved and possibly amended by the

City Council, said Assistant City Manager Mark Alexander. The issue will

be on the council's April 1 agenda.

As the agreement stands now, the city will pay around $75,000 annually

for its share of operating costs, Alexander said. In the event someone is

injured during the extended hours, the city would take responsibility for

the incident, Alexander said.

The public will primarily benefit from the use of the $3.5-million

facility by using its 50 999 MHz computers with their high-speed Internet

access.

"The wealth that's being offered to the community is the technology,"

librarian Lindsay Ward said.
