Letter -- Jerry Lane

April 03, 2002

This is in response to the complaint regarding the flushing and

dumping of precious water by the Crescenta Valley Water District.

Water being flushed from fire hydrants is, of course, the same water

that we pay to drink. Usually, this flushing occurs in "dead end" lines,

lines at the end of major lines where water is trapped with no movement.

Flushing is necessary to avoid rust buildup and to maintain the quality

of the water in the line.

Of course, it is disconcerting to see water running down the street

when we are being told that water is scarce and must be conserved by

consumers. Suppose the Board of CV Water could be approached with a

suggestion that it lease a water truck with something like a 5,000-gallon

tank capacity to store the drawn-off water instead of letting it run down

the road. Would CV customers be willing to pay a service charge to have

that water delivered to fill a pool, water trees or wash down the

driveway?

Think about it. How can that water be used? I'm sure that the

Crescenta Valley Water District's Board of Directors would like to hear

your suggestions on this subject.
