Letter -- Glendale Human Relations Coalition

April 09, 2002

The Board of Directors of the Glendale Human Relations Coalition

(GHRC) is gravely distressed and outraged by the mean-spirited and

hateful commentary expressed by longtime resident Iva Carrico at the City

Council meeting of April 2.

We are proud to assert that a great majority of Glendale residents

outright reject the blatant racism expressed by Ms. Carrico. The hateful

attack against the Armenian community is an attack on all of us. We must

speak out forcefully against hate incidents, including hate speech, as we

do against hate crime. Those who choose to express their right of free

speech by trampling on the dignity of others will and should bear the

moral outrage of the entire community.

Targeting members of our community is irresponsible and won't be

dismissed. GHRC welcomes the News-Press' forthright editorial and

encourages other organizations and individuals to join us in embracing

diversity and in publicly denouncing acts of hate, prejudice and

discrimination. In the words of E. Weisel, "Silence comforts the

oppressor, never the oppressed."

Further, we invite members of the community to visit our coalition

meetings on the third Thursday of every month at 4:30 p.m., at City Hall,

Management Services in the second floor conference room, and participate

in our activities.
