Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Hirsh continues to make life
tough on his opponents.
The former Golden Knight hurler is 7-1 with a 1.98 earned-run average
in 59 innings following an eight-inning outing in Friday's 14-4 victory
against Occidental.
The 6-foot-8 right-hander scattered eight hits, walked one batter and
struck out five, yielding no earned runs.
Hirsh won his first six outings of the season before dropping a 4-1
decision against SCIAC front-runner Pomona Pitzer (29-5, 15-0). Pomona
Pitzer swept Cal Lutheran in a three-game set April 5 and 6.
In the outing, Hirsh struck out nine, but also allowed 11 hits and
four earned runs. The Kingsmen only supported their pitcher with one run,
versus the 46 that they had given him in his first six outings.
Hirsh, who has walked 16 batters and struck out 39, will most likely
earn a start in Wednesday's game at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Errol Simonitsch (St. Francis, 2000) sophomore pitcher, Gonzaga
University baseball -- The 2000 News-Press All-Area first-team selection
was victimized by some untimely hits and a suspect defense in Saturday's
9-2 loss at the University of San Francisco.
Simonitsch tossed six innings, allowing 10 hits and one walk, but he
was hurt by three errors which resulted in six unearned runs.
The left-hander fell to 2-3 for the Bulldogs (19-17, 8-7 in West Coast
Conference), who rebounded to take the three-game series with a win
Sunday.
In 10 appearances, Simonitsch has thrown 52 1/3 innings, allowing 69
hits and 43 runs, including 33 earned (5.68 ERA).
The former Golden Knight standout has walked 12 batters and following
his four strikeouts Saturday, has fanned 41 batters.
Becca Baldridge (Crescenta Valley, 1998) junior first
baseman/outfielder, San Jose State University softball -- Baldridge is
still the team leader with a .344 batting average (52 for 151), but the
Spartans' recent three-game road trip didn't do the two-time News-Press
All-Area first-team selection any favors.
San Jose State (16-35, 4-10 in Western Athletic Conference) dropped a
pair of 1-0 decisions at Fresno State University, which came on the heels
of a 7-0 setback to No. 8-ranked Cal.
