Letter -- Ron Leath

April 18, 2002

I have been a homeowner in Glendale for 17 years, watch the City

Council meetings and read the News-Press. I have become increasingly

perplexed and frustrated. I do not understand why the welfare of

Glendale's lost, mistreated and feral animals is not put out for open

bid.

My family had several unfortunate experiences with the past

incarnation of the Humane Society. The current administration is new and

seemingly well-meaning, but unproven. Although they appear to be meeting

the council's "findings," there is no basis for comparison. There is no

evidence of a more enlightened and humane mission, nor of real systemic

change.

The city of Glendale requests multiple bids requiring credentials and

track records when considering all sorts of municipal services, from road

repair to beautification. Why not the same consideration for our animals?

If the current Humane Society is the best we can do, so be it, but the

City Council should act responsibly and examine other options before

making that determination. I for one would like to know what else is out

there.
