GLENDALE -- Laurene Miller will remember her husband, Robert, as a man

who was always willing to give money or food to to anyone in need who

walked into Armies of the World on Colorado Street.

Robert Miller died Friday at Glendale Memorial Hospital from

complications of cancer. He was 47.

"It didn't matter if someone was homeless or a person of wealth," she

said. "He would welcome anyone who came in the store."

Robert Miller had been undergoing treatment for an unknown form of

cancer for about two weeks before his death. He didn't experience

symptoms of the disease until about two months ago, his wife said.

The couple celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary less than a year

ago in July, renting a pirate ship and sailing around Rainbow Harbor in

Long Beach while renewing their vows.

They owned and operated Armies Of The World -- an Army surplus store

-- together since their marriage in 1976.

Robert Miller was also active in the entertainment industry, providing

props, costuming set decorations and research for movies like "Platoon."

He also supported many service organizations, including the Boy

Scouts.

He is survived by his wife; their two daughters, Hailey, 16, and

Courtney 14; and his sisters, Pamela Miller Mitchell of Lake View Terrace

and Penny Romo of Simi Valley.

Funeral services will not be held, in honor of Robert Miller's request

to be cremated.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to

the City of Hope, 1500 E. Duarte Road, Duarte, CA 91010-3000; or to Hailey and Courtney Miller for their college education, c/o Jim and Pam

Elyea, 1450 Capistrano Ave., Glendale, CA 91208.
