Five GCC runners qualify for state

Five Glendale Community College track and field athletes qualified for

this Saturday's state championship with top-six finishes in last

Saturday's Southern California Championship at San Diego State

University.

Both Ana Gjesdal, a former Crescenta Valley High standout, and Chris

Wells-Anders did it by winning their events.

Gjesdal won the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11 minutes 10.01 seconds, and Wells-Anders won the men's 800 in 1:51.67.

Otherwise, Ivan Alvarado was a double qualifier by taking second in

the men's 3,000 steeplechase in 9:14.2 and third in the 800.

Pilar Delgado was also a double qualifier in the women's 5,000 with a

time of 18:22 and in the 10,000, which was run May 4 at the Southern

California prelims, in 39.38, good for fifth.

Ani Bagumyan rounded out the Vaquero qualifiers with her sixth-place

finish in the 1,500 in 4:57.6.

GCC's Patterson ends career at state tourney

Glendale Community College sophomore men's tennis player ended his

community college career with a first-round loss to Ronald Paz from

Canada College, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at the California Community College State

Tournament last weekend at La Costa Resort.

The state tournament was also the final match for Vaquero head Coach

Bob Donaghy, woh is retiring from coaching after 25 years with the

Vaqueros.
