May 15, 2002

More than 100 Lincoln Elementary School students participating in the

school's instrumental music program performed two concerts at school

assemblies Tuesday. The group of musicians then performed for parents and

the community Tuesday evening. After one student performed a solo after

only a few months of rehearsals, director Chloe Ross asked the crowd of

students in the audience, "You see what you can accomplish by

practicing?" Performances featured songs like "Frog in a Tree," "Yankee

Doodle" and "Western Rider." Songs featured the talents of the trombone,

trumpet and string sections. Josi Siminski, a sixth-grade teacher at

Lincoln Elementary, played a guitar solo during "Western Rider." Siminski

said she was one of Ross' students when learning how to play guitar as a

student at Monte Vista Elementary School. Karen Hayhurst is the

co-director of Lincoln's student orchestra.
