Descanso features Irish and Scottish music

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- Highland Sun, a band featuring traditional

Irish and Scottish music, will perform at p.m. Sunday, June 30, at

Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive, La Canada Flintridge.

Highland Sun's music centers around dual fiddles, blending the

crisp Donegal style with Scottish influences. The band favors

up-tempo dance tunes, lightly punctuated with slower, more

contemplative music.

The concert is a part of the 2002 Under the Oaks concert series at

Descanso Gardens. The concerts are free with admission to the

Gardens.

Homeowners council to meet July 1

NORTHEAST GLENDALE -- The Glendale Homeowners Coordinating Council

will meet at 7 p.m. July 1 at the Oakmont Country Club, 3100 Country

Club Drive.

Glendale Unified School Board Vice President Pam Ellis will be the

keynote speaker. Ellis is also executive director of the Character

and Ethics Project.

A question and answer session will follow. Refreshments will be

provided.

Parks offer summer program

GLENDALE -- The Glendale Parks, Recreation and Community Service

department is offering kids an alternative to loafing around the

house all summer.

The city is offering Parks Creating Futures for children between 6

and 15. The program offers sports, games, arts and crafts, performing

arts and educational activities between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday

through Saturday.

The drop-in program requires no commitment and will be offered

starting Monday until Sept. 1.

An adult must accompany all children younger than 8.

The program will be offered at Maple Park, 820 E. Maple St.;

Palmer Park, 610 E. Palmer Ave.; Dunsmore Park, 4700 Dunsmore Ave.;

Montrose Park, 3529 Clifton Place; Fremont Park, 600 W. Hahn Ave.;

Carr Park, 1615 E. Colorado St. and Glenoaks Park, 2531 Glenoaks

Blvd.

Red Cross holds blood drive

GLENDALE -- The Glendale-Crescenta Valley Red Cross Chapter is

hosting a blood drive Thursday.

Appointments are not required, but donors who do make an

appointment will be given priority.

The drive will be from 1 to 8 p.m. at the chapter, 1501 S. Brand

Blvd. Blood drives are held regularly for those unable to attend

Thursday's event.
