Year-round schools get back in class Monday

July 06, 2002

It's back to school Monday for Glendale Unified School District's

year-round education students in tracks A, B and C. Most schools are

planning welcome-back events for parents. These informal

get-togethers provide a great opportunity to reconnect with friends,

find out what's new and what you can do to help in the year ahead.

District-sponsored summer school programs, meanwhile, are running

full tilt. Roosevelt and Wilson middle schools are experiencing their

Merrick, deputy superintendent for the Glendale High School cluster.

Glendale High has almost as many students taking summer school

courses as attend the school during the traditional school year. So

Here's what's happening at Glendale cluster schools.

Ten Cerritos students and Principal Janice Hanada met Sharon

Davis, the first lady of California, in ceremonies recently at Muir

Elementary School to honor all district schools that earned the

$5,000 Governor's Reading Award.

Meanwhile, 162 Cerritos students are attending the district's

Summer Academy program, designed to help improve in reading, writing

skills and proficiency in English.

Glenoaks Elementary

Summer school is underway for students enrolled in the University

of La Verne's five-week enrichment program sponsored again this year

by Glenoaks Elementary. Classes continue through July 26. The school

office will be open for business throughout the session during the

morning only. The office will reopen again Aug. 22.

by the cafeteria for coffee and treats after dropping off students

for their first day of school Monday. Arrival time for students in

8:10 a.m.

John Marshall Elementary

Returning students starting the new year on Monday will see the

new marquee, purchased by the PTA and recently installed on the

John Muir Elementary

PTA leaders invite all Muir parents to celebrate the beginning of

the new school year at a coffee beginning at 8 a.m. Friday in the
