How did he hear the voice of the 'silent majority'?

August 24, 2002

Two recent letters have referred to a survey taken three years ago

regarding the RV parking situation in unincorporated La Crescenta.

According to Ed Delaney (Community Commentary, Aug. 19), 85% of

the respondents said they wanted to retain the existing county

ordinance. Delaney claims they are the "silent majority."

How could you possibly tell what the respondents wanted? I

remember that "survey" well. It was the most ridiculous, confusing,

unintelligible waste of paper and postage I've ever seen. It was

obviously the product of a committee whose members had no clue how to

properly frame survey questions.

And, if memory serves, that "survey" was distributed by the county

as a courtesy, but it was not written by the county.

So, Mr. Delaney, you cannot draw any conclusions from the

so-called survey results.

The truth is, we have no idea what the majority of La Crescenta

inhabitants think about RV parking. We only know how the vocal

residents feel because their comments, from both sides of the

controversy, have been printed in the News-Press.

And, lest you believe I'm a member of the "well-organized and

financed noisy minority," think again. I do not own an RV or any

other vehicle that would be affected by an ordinance, nor am I

acquainted with any of the people who have allegedly "dragged this

issue on for more than two years."

Until now, I have been a member of the "silent majority" you

purport to represent. And I have no problem at all with the

occasional RVs I see in my community.
