Schools schedule remembrance of Sept. 11 victims

September 07, 2002

Glendale Unified School District officials have asked that those

attending schools and at district work sites try to observe a moment

of silence at 8:46 a.m. Wednesday to remember the victims of Sept.

11.

Many schools have planned ceremonies such as reciting the Pledge

of Allegiance, singing a patriotic song, participation of local

police officers, firefighters and other community members, the

reading of student poems and essays and other activities felt to be

appropriate by the site leadership at each school.

District students will also take part in the city's Patriot Day

observance Wednesday evening. Parents are invited to attend school

ceremonies and should check with their child's school office about

start time and location.

Also on Sept. 11, the Burger King restaurant at the corner of San

Fernando Road and Central Avenue in south Glendale will donate 100%

of proceeds between the hours of midnight and 11:59 p.m. to the Glendale Police Memorial Project. For more information, call

246-9053.

Here's what's happening at schools in the Glendale High School

cluster.

Cerritos Elementary

Principal Janice Hanada visited classrooms this week to

congratulate students on their gains in Stanford 9 and state

standards scores. Parents will receive a handbook this year with

information on school and district policies, school activities and

events and a listing of who to contact for information and volunteer

opportunities.

Glenoaks Elementary

Students and parents got their first glimpse of the school's new

principal, Bob Modrzejewski, and assistant principal, Angie Schultz,

at Howdy events this week. Modrzejewski replaced Sally Buckley, now

principal at Rosemont Middle School. Schultz follows Ilene Anderson,

now a principal in the Arcadia school district.

Horace Mann Elementary

Parents and neighbors are invited to the school's Sept. 11

observance, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. on the school playground.

Students are creating a paper chain for display on the school fence.

Each student will contribute one strip of paper on which he or she

has written their thoughts on what they think the United States is

all about.

John Marshall Elementary

New Principal Barbara Mikolasko said students in tracks A, B and D

have been selling wrapping paper to raise money for a new school

piano. First trimester report cards will be going home with Track A

students Sept. 26. Students in tracks B, C and D will receive their

first report cards Oct. 24.
