Shaw's hot start carries UC Davis

September 09, 2002

In an effort to keep track of local high school athletes who now

compete in college, the News-Press will devote space twice a week,

usually Mondays and Thursdays, to an update:

Ryan Shaw (St. Francis, 2001) sophomore forward, UC Davis men's

soccer -- In just four matches this season, Shaw has almost

duplicated his offensive output from his entire freshman campaign --

five goals and 13 points in 20 matches -- and that hasn't been good

news for UC Davis' opponents.

After earning California Collegiate Athletic Assn. Player of the

Week honors for the week of Aug. 26-Sept. 2 -- during which he was

selected Offensive Most Valuable Player of the Cal State Bakersfield

Roadrunner Classic after tallying three goals and an assist -- Shaw

scored his fourth goal of the season in Thursday's 2-2 tie with

Dominican and added his team-leading 10th point with an assist in

Sunday's 2-0 victory against Western Washington.

The 2001 News-Press All-Area co-Player of the Year -- with La

Canada's Eric Irvine, now a sophomore defender at Santa Clara

University -- has scored match-winning goals against Seattle Pacific

and Humboldt State for the Aggies (3-0-1), who are ranked No. 10 in

the National Soccer Coaches Assn. of America/adidas Division II

national top 25 poll.

UC Davis, which also features 2001 La Canada graduate Jeff Hull,

returns to action at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Sonoma State.

Ryan Burnett (La Canada, 2000) junior distance runner, Point Loma

Nazarene men's cross-country -- After earning All-Golden State

Athletic Conference honors for the second straight year in 2001,

Burnett seems to only be getting better at the outset of his junior

campaign and the results of his first two races more than back up

such claims.

After winning the UC San Diego Invitational in his first meet

Aug. 31, Burnett took second at Saturday's University of San Diego

Invitational, clocking 16 minutes 37 seconds on the 5,000-meter

course at Morley Field in Balboa Park.

San Diego's Antonio Lopez won the meet in 16:15, also leading the

Toreros to the victory with 36 points, ahead of Point Loma's 58.

In the team's season-opener, Burnett clocked 21:59.8 to win the

four-mile race at UCSD, helping the Crusaders to another second-place

finish with 43 points.

Point Loma Nazarene returns to action Saturday in the Aztec

Invitational at Balboa Park.
