Downey 3, La Canada 0: The Spartans never got going offensively

Saturday and fell in a ninth-place quarterfinal match of the Cerritos

Gahr/Molten Invitational, 15-9, 15-2, 15-8, at Lakewood St. Joseph

High.

Suzanne Swenson had four kills and two blocks, Kasey Hurlbutt

added three kills and four digs, and KiTing Kolar, Marilena Mahan and

Courtney Turner all had two kills for La Canada (1-2), which received

13 assists from Camille Cunningham.

L.A. Notre Dame Academy 3, La Canada 0: Despite nine kills from

KiTing Kolar and seven kills and two blocks from Suzanne Swenson, the

Spartans fell, 15-9, 15-10, 15-6, in the second round of the Cerritos

Gahr/Molten Invitational on Saturday at Lakewood St. Joseph High.

La Canada (1-1) -- ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division

IIIA -- hung tough in the first two games against the No. 4-ranked

Regals (2-0), but failed to mount much of an attack in the final

game.

Kasey Hurlbutt tallied six kills, Annie Hillier had four kills and

Marilena Mahan added three kills for the Spartans, who also received

30 assists from Camille Cunningham.

La Canada 3, Lakewood St. Joseph 2: Behind eight kills and four

blocks from Suzanne Swenson, the Spartans upset the defending CIF

Southern Section Division IIIAA champion, 15-6, 11-15, 17-15, 11-15,

15-13, in Friday's season-opener in the first round of the Cerritos

Gahr/Molten Invitational at St. Joseph High.

Courtney Turner had six kills, KiTing Kolar contributed five kills

and Kasey Hurlbutt added four for La Canada, which also got 25

assists from Camille Cunningham in Mia Wilson's varsity coaching

debut.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 3, Sierra Madre Maranatha 0: The

Tologs rolled to a quick victory in Friday's season-opening match in

the first round of the Cerritos Gahr/Molten Invitational, posting a

15-5, 15-6, 15-1 triumph.

Senior outside hitter Jillian Davis led Flintridge Sacred Heart

with 12 kills and eight digs and junior opposite hitter Brittany

Esser added seven kills and five digs.

Kathryn Gorsch and Kim Heller combined for nine kills and four

blocks in the middle and setter Kacey Knauf had three kills, five

blocks, seven digs and 29 assists.

Flintridge Prep 3, North Hills L.A. Baptist 0: Sophomore middle

blocker Lindsay Fletcher delivered 12 kills and four aces and

Courtney Hambleton added nine kills, six aces and 13 digs Friday to

lead the Rebels to a nonleague victory on the road in the team's

season opener, 15-8, 15-6, 15-10.
